imageAndrew Cory

Andrew is the Artistic Director of Backbone Youth Arts. He studied drama at The University of Queensland, going on to work with independent theatre companies including Debacle Theatre Company, Brink Theatre and Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre. It was during this time that he developed a passion for clown, mask and physically orientated theatre. In 1997, he travelled overseas to undertake training in London (at École Philippe Gaulier), France (Centre Selavy Mask School), Denmark (Todo Performance Academy) and the USA (The School for Mime Theatre). In 2002, he received a professional development grant from Arts Queensland to pursue his clown studies at Bont’s International Clown School in Spain.

In 2003, Andrew founded Red Spoon, a company dedicated to the presentation and development of clown, physical theatre and original text. The company has produced two international collaborations with Singaporean theatre artists, Incubating Juice (2003) and Moving Afterlife (for the 2004 Queensland Poetry Festival). He has worked professionally in Australia, Asia and Europe as an actor, a movement director and a clown. In Australia, he has worked for Queensland Ballet, Queensland Theatre Company, The Queensland Orchestra, Opera Queensland and State Theatre Company of South Australia.
